Health and Environmental Impacts of Nanotechnology Explored

Nanotechnology and its possible risks, both real and perceived, were the subject of a recent hearing, several documents, and a session at last month's Industrial Physics Forum of the American Institute of Physics.

A new book by German physicist Jürgen Altmann of Dortmund University looks at Military Nanotechnology: Potential Applications and Preventive Arms Control (Routledge, 2006). Both near-term and long-term applications are examined.

Nanotechnology - in my toothpaste...? - Nanowerk, USA
Unlikely as it seems at first blush, the $200 billion global cosmetics industry is one of the major players in the emerging field of nanotechnology. According to the Centre for the Study of Environmental Change at Lancaster University in Britain, the cosmetics industry already holds the largest number of patents for nanoparticles – and be it toothpaste, sunscreen, shampoo, hair conditioner, lipstick, eye shadow, after shave, moisturizer or deodorant, the industry is leading the way.

Firm releases nano safety framework - Small Times, USA
ICF International of Fairfax, Va., released an analysis of the U.S. Federal Government's efforts to research the human health and environmental consequences of nanotechnology.
The report, titled "Characterizing the Environmental, Health, and Safety Implications of Nanotechnology: Where Should the Federal Government Go From Here?" describes a need to chart a more aggressive course when it comes to answering such questions.
