Does coating nanoparticles make them safe(r) for cosmetics? - NanoWerk, USA
The cosmetics industry of course would argue that their products are already safe, whether they use nanoparticulate ingredients or not. On the other hand, there are research reports that show that nanoparticles could cause DNA damage and could accumulate in organs (with unknown consequences).
NGOs come together in Europe to develop a nano strategy - Jennifer Sass's Blog, USA
Who owns the technology, who will benefit, and who will bear the risks? Will the global North reap the benefits of future nano-enabled cancer cures, while the global South ends up with our old nano-contaminated computers and electronics waste? Will the industries and jobs go to regions with inadequate environmental and worker protection laws, while the products come to wealthier regions? How will military applications be used, and who will provide oversight?
Europe vs. USA: labeling of nano-enabled consumer products - Jennifer Sass's Blog, USA
Since nanomaterials are already in hundreds of consumer products, including food packaging, without having undergone safety testing, the public has a right to know. And, industry and regulators have an obligation to provide information, oversight, and public protection.
